The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using scintillator hodoscope scintillating fiber array. flux is determined pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in central target analyzed solenoidal field straw-tube drift chamber six packages planar chambers cathode strips wires. Electromagnetic showers reconstructed cylindrical calorimeter inside magnet lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification achieved by measuring loss wire flight particles between detectors outside magnet. signals all recorded flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions latency 3.3 $\mu$s. detector operates routinely rates 40 kHz data 600 megabytes per second. We describe beam, components, electronics, data-acquisition monitoring systems, performance during first three years operation.
